Strange Laws Part One - Genealogy Fun Quiz

For those of you who took the Native Place Names Quiz last month you may be interested in knowing that the average score was 3.7 out of 10 and that only three people scored a perfect 10. That's less than a tenth of a percent. That was a hard quiz.

This month we're lightening things up a little, beginning a two part series on strange laws from around the world. These strange laws often provide insights into the quirks of a different place or a different time. They also made us smile as we researched the article. We hope you enjoy them too.

Our quiz takes the form of a ten stop pretend trip around the world. Can you stay out of legal trouble in your fictional travels? Let's find out. The quiz begins now...

The Quiz

1) We begin our travels in the City of Toronto. You arrive on a Saturday and have a most excellent dinner at an Italian Restaurant - lots of Garlic bread. In fact the next morning anyone near you can easily detect the garlic. What must you avoid?

 Going to a hockey game
 Riding a bus
 Riding a street car

2) Next on to Bolivia. You go out to dinner again. What is the legal limit of wine consumption for the female members of your party?

 Zero Glasses
 One Glass
 Two Glasses

3) Now you move on to Japan. What color must you avoid wearing unless you are mourning the loss of someone in your family?

 Red
 Black
 Purple

4) Our next stop is Madagascar. It just so happens that in Japan you found out that one of the female members of your party is pregnant (congratulations!). While in Madagascar she must not:

 Wear a hat
 Wear white shoes
 Eat shell fish

5) From Madagascar you travel to Australia. When you arrive at your hotel room you find a light bulb in a lamp to be broken. There is a replacement bulb sitting on the table next to the lamp, making it an easy job. What do you do?

Replace the bulb (as long as it is NOT Sunday)
Immediately leave the room and pull the fire alarm
Have the front desk call a licensed electrician

6) From Australia on to Greece we go. You rent a car in Athens and tour the countryside. Be careful however. You can lose your license if the police deem you to be:

 Poorly dressed
 A Gypsy
 Mentally Retarded

7) From Greece to Italy. You are having lunch at a beautiful open air cafe in Rome. After you pay your bill you must:

Wash your hands with WARM water and lemon
Leave the cafe within a MAXIMUM of ten minutes
Make sure that you take your receipt with you when leaving and do NOT throw it out until you are at least 120 feet away

8) Onward to the UK. While touring London the pregnant female member of your party needs to urinate and you can't find a rest room. It is illegal for her to urinate in:

 A quiet alley way
 A policeman's hat
There is no place where it is illegal

9) You take a day trip to the city of York. You come across a small group of well behaved Scotsmen inside the city walls. One of them appears to be carrying an antique (but functioning) bow and arrow. They're likely on their way to an antiques show. Although you hopefully won't, you are within your rights to:

 Seize the bow and arrow
 Shoot the Scotsman dead
Charge the Scotsman a ten pound fine

10) Finally back in London. You're tired. You've likely broken several laws in your travels. You need to send some post cards. As you're about to mail the postcards you notice that you've put some of the stamps on upside down. What do you do?

Leave them be. Who cares. Mail the post cards.
Remove and fix the stamps and mail the post cards.
Have a nap and then mail the post cards as is.
